Polyurethane Glue Fumes Toxic?
We're having our kitchen remodeled, and the floor will be installed sometime in the next few weeks. The floor guy is here and he said he'd have to use a polyurethane glue to install the hardwood floor. I asked, "Does that have an odor?" And he said "Yeah, your house will smell like Liquid Nails (an extremely strong-smelling adhesive - I've used it myself) for a day or so. And it's best if you keep the windows shut and turn the fan on, so the floor blahblahblah."
WHAT??? Sorry, I'm not closing the windows just so we can re-breathe a smelly fume. My question is, what about my macaw? Her cage is in the adjacent room but there's no real place for her to get away from it anywhere in the house.
so my question is, should I board her for a week while this guy does his thing or just leave the windows open (which is what I'm going to do regardless)? How toxic is polyurethane glue?
BTW, they primed the walls with low-VOC primer and I was impressed. It was stinkin' hot and thunderstorming so we actually had the windows closed and the AC on and I couldn't smell a thing!

I reccomend boarding the fids.

Re: Polyurethane Glue Fumes Toxic?
I would board them also. It just wouldn't be worth the risk to me.

I would board her too....not worth taking any chances.......
Can't wait to see pictures of the new kitchen!!!!!

I boarded Ruby when we had fumes. A nice vet let me take her big cage and all and I would go several times a day to "visit". She did just fine.

Unless you have some place to keep her isolated completely from the off gassing, board her.
Kind of like smoking in the room with a bird, they may live threw the initial onslaught, but the damage is done and eventually the effects will show.

When in doubt get them out!

I agree with all the above postings.

Re: Polyurethane Glue Fumes Toxic?
Thanks to everyone for the unanimous "out!"... I called my avian vet and they DO have room to board her during that window of time, thank goodness.
I was going to bring her in soon anyway, as she needs a pedicure and a beakicure. It's only for 2 or 3 nights and they love her there!

That's great, you'll rest better and not worry so much if you KNOW she's safe.
